I've just started researching inland open water swimming here in UK after some fantastic experiences
in Australia. One very special place i'd like to share with anyone heading out to the Northern Territory
in Oz is Edith Falls. This group of natural pools is only accessible in the 'dry' (winter) season,
(May - early October) and is safe from crocs then too. But it has to be the most beautiful place I have
ever swam. It can be found just off the highway between Darwin and Katherine. Strongly recommend it
to all. Some pictures on this website: http://www.ourterritory.com/katherine_region/edith_falls.htm
Happy swimming Richard

Kayakers are considering making a demonstration about access to inland waters. It would be nice if we
could have a presence should the demo go ahead: http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=47543&p=366135#p366135

Subject: swimming outdoors -open air pools
My experience of outdoor swimming has been varied, in my childhood it was mostly seaside swimming in
North Wales. I learnt to swim one summer in the Lido at Lake Lugano,Switzerland thanks to my Dad. As
a teenager I swam in the Thames in the summer around Maidenhead and up stream towards Cookham in the
mid 1960s. I also tried to move around North London from Hampstead Heath pools to Hackney Victoria Park
open air pool in the late summer early mornin hours. As a youth worker I discovered Hathersage open air
pool in the Peak District and then every year the open air pools of Wirral with parties of Liverpool
families. Rivacre Valley near Ellesmere Port was a former 1930s nudist colony, shielded by large hedges,
converted at ome time post war into an open air pool. Hundreds used to cram into the pool in the 1970s,
so crowded one hot day that one young man drowned un noticed. New Ferry Baths on the edge of the Mersey,
with a view across to Liverpool, New Brighton Baths with its beautiful 1930s style arena were regulars
for Liverpool families. All are now closed. The 1980s saw the closure of all Wirral pools, New Brighton
went under to a mean council and heavy storms in 1991 (I think). Its loss finally killed New Brighton. It
is one big car park on the front. Wirral council is now (2009)closing half its libraries and indoor
pools, having waited until the end of "2008 Captal of Culture" year just in case anyone spotted the
irony of it. Health and safety is used as an excuse for closure and restriction of open air facilities
or even public sites which don't belong to anyone but the reality is meanness combined with a preference
by councils for "controlled" environments and large scale municipal "Projects" leisure centres, Olympic
size pools etc. In a time when fewer and fewer children get the opportunity to swim and more and more
pensioners are looking for exercise opportunities?

Even the sea here in Wales is down to 4 deg C. I've swum 4 times this week, once in the sun, once when
it was snowing with a gale blowing off the sea (extremely bracing indeed) and once in light sleety bits
and pieces. I stay in for 3/4 minutes at this temperature - better safe than sorry in the sea. Keep swimming

Finally I find likeminded folks. When I was a child my Grandmother on my Mom’s side would swim frequently
in the Rivers and Lakes No matter what time of the year. Other branches of the family claimed it was
because She was part Modoc Indian and that she was crazy. I began Finswimming all year around about
9 years ago. I don’t like wetsuts..One Year(Fall 1998) I repeatedly kept procrastinating by saying
Ill stop swimming next week etc etc. I enjoy it so much!!!! Next thing I knew it was January -what
the heck Ill just keep swimming. So began my all year swim rituals. I have become my Grandmother/Smart
Lady!!! It’s a great stress release-no winter blues, few viruses get to me or stay long and having
no ACL in my left knee… the fin swimming allows me to keep my legs built up enough to not require a
knee brace any more. My favorite Swimming Hole - Lake Natoma is near Sacramento California. The water
temperature varies from is 6-20C(Winter/Summer). Even with our very hot weather Folsom Lake which is
upstream feeds Lake Natoma from its cold bottom core. The Lake Natoma is a narrow 8km plus lake. No
power boats are allowed and is a haven for the Sacramento State University Aquatics center which also
has classes and rentals to the general public. If you are visiting Sacramento California You can get
your coldwater cravings satisfied here for sure.

Can anyone advise where I can buy a sleeveless wet suit top for swimming in cold water (50/60 degrees).
Hopefully, not too restrictive, so probably less than 3mm. Thank you, Ken Thorne

I don't think you're being a wimp. For a start they may give you grip on slippy rocks, you can run
along the riverbank more easily; and if you have to walk back the way you came, they're dead handy.
I use some Teva's - essentially canoe shoes with a rubber grippy sole. About £20 on line. And the supermarkets
tend to sell loads of cheap ones in the summer for about £7. They don't really give you any thermal
insulation though. For that you need to look at some lightweight wetsuit boots made of neoprene, with
grippy soles. Hope this helps.

until they had addressed the problem thoroughly!
