THE RALSA PRINCIPLES FOR MANAGING SAFE SWIMMING
 |
|

Notices are to inform. Make certain that your notices inform the public of the dangers,
especially unseen ones.
You may need to have a few lines of explanation beneath the sign. Your sign must fully inform
of the danger concerned.
Make certain that credibility is not compromised. A "Danger Deep Water" notice posted by
shallow water will do just that. Consequently the public will assume that other notices, which may
genuinely warn of dangers, are false too.
Wherever possible avoid the use of bossy notices, especially in combination with false ones,
as this is likely to lead to a dangerous situation.
Treat the public as adults & they will behave as adults. Treat them as scum & they will behave
as scum.
Always use signs, in preference to notices. There may not be a standard one for every
situation, so make one up, or use one of the RALSA ones (no charge). The use of the
miscellaneous "!" sign, inevitably relies on the wording beneath it. Not everyone reads
English or even reads at all. Besides everyone comprehends a sign quicker than reading.
Site the sign by the danger, not miles away.
Always consult with the swimming fraternity before posting notices.
